Que: Kindly introduce yourself and what you do
My name is Ugbah Isioma, a Nigeria-based developer. I love designing and building digital solutions, especially web and mobile apps.
Que: What aspect of web development are you into and how long have you been in this path?
I have 5 years of work experience working in frontend development(react & vue) as well as UI design, I also do mobile development with react-native, and currently learning other technologies like nestjs, and svelte.
Que: What are the major products you have done?
I have worked on several projects for clients and my employer over the years, for example; I led the design of the fintech app called Kolomoni Savings, as well as an eLearning app called A1 Tutors, these 2 products currently serve 10k+ users around the country. Also worked on the frontend development of an e-commerce project called Ojanowapp, whose selling point is that you get your order in 30 mins or less (within Lagos).
Also currently working on a project that aims to offer online payment solutions within West Africa, including an online payment checkout.
Que: What are the challenges you have faced as a developer and how were you able to overcome them?
As for challenges faced, well, I am fully self-taught, so there was always this feeling of “you’re not a mathematician, you can’t do this” or “only computer science genius can do this”, but over time, I have come to see that math knowledge helps but to a good extent, one can still manage. I believe anything can be learned when one is given enough time and effort.
Que: Any tip or hack for junior and aspiring web developers
DON’T RUSH. Things are gonna break, you’ll get errors everywhere, and you’ll forget all syntaxes you’ve written a thousand times before, Do not feel you are not good enough or not growing. As long as you are consistent and dedicated to your craft, you’ll get it, I promise. For anyone getting into javascript, learn typescript, you won’t regret it.
Que: What does a typical day in your life as a web developer look like?
For most of my working hours, I am pretty much locked to my laptop. I start off my day; by freshening up, having a quick breakfast and heading to my 9-5, most of which would involve working on extending features on an existing project I maintain, or working collaborating on a design project with my colleague, or just taking lessons on learning platforms like laracast or udemy or good old Youtube. I get 1-hour break for lunch, and I’d typically switch projects after my break, head home by 5, rest up till 7, and resume working on any side projects or attending Stand up meetings. Most of my day is mostly dedicated to my work and craft, at least I’m not married, so for now, my time is mine, lol.
